Adel Dam

Went for a walk around Adel Dam nature reserve recently.  A small reserve maintained by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

Haven’t been for a while even though it’s just down the road.  It was fairly quiet to be honest and there’s probably more bird life at the park next to it.  Saw Jays and Mandarin Ducks along with Greater Spotted Woodpecker.  Got some great photos recently.

Greater Spotted Woodpecker

This woodpecker has become a regular drumming on the tree at the back of our garden.  I took this with my canon 7d and 100-400mm zoomed in all the way.  Still not the crisp clear pictures I’d like but some nice compositions?

Click on thumbprints to see larger photo.  Sorry they are all over the place – can’t get the hang of placing them neatly into the blog!!!

Out and About Today

At the feeders theres been blue tits, great tits, chaffinch, bullfinch, dunnock, house sparrows, starlings, blackbirds and the bramblings are still around.
Out on My Patch 1, behind my house are more of the same, plus gulls, goldfinch two huge crows, rabbits and a greater spotted woodpecker in flight.
These are photos I’ve taken in the garden at different times of the birds I’ve mentioned.

Adel Dam

Adel Dam is a small Yorkshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve at the far end of Golden Acre lake.

It is well managed by a group of volunteers.  It consists of mixed woodland, with marshy areas and a lake.  I have seen plenty of wildfowl, herons, teal, mandarin, pochard, cormorant, coot, moor hen, woodpeckers, foxes, thrush and roe deer.
There are two hides.  One overlooking a marshy area, that has feeders.  All the tits and finches visit and the greater spotted woodpecker.  The other hide is at the far end of the lake.  It was here that i got the best view I have had of the fox.

Foxes are such beautiful creatures I cannot understand anyone labelling them vermin.
On walking back, i spied the greater spotted woodpecker in the trees.

It doesn’t take much to please me – I was totally made up to have seen these chaps.
